About the Book

HOW HARD IS IT TO FORGIVE? After finding the biological mother who abandoned her as a baby, learning the identity of her birth father and her biological brother, Dupree is left distraught and betrayed. Like a volcano about to erupt, she vows to have nothing to do with her newly discovered family--so help her God! However, if Dupree's mother, Tiny, has anything to say about it, Dupree won't be able to keep that vow.

How does a former teenaged runaway become a wealthy, sophisticated business executive? Tiny's quest for happiness and independence in Kingston, Jamaica, has taken her on a life-altering journey through hell. After a vicious attack and a serious sickness that leaves her fighting for her life in the hospital, Tiny prays for death . . . but then God speaks. Will she listen to His voice? What exactly is He saying?

Mama Pearl tiptoed slowly toward the old cars, her steps hesitant but determined. The first few cars she looked into were empty. She continued toward the back when a bad odor filled her nose. With her face twisted up, Mama Pearl took deep breaths as she continued walking.

A scream lodged in her throat as she approached the last car. “Oh, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl whispered in shock. Two pieces of sticks, resembling legs, were hanging out the opened back door. Her heart slamming against her chest, Mama Pearl walked closer and saw the scrawny, young girl shaking uncontrollably in the backseat. She smelled like rotten garbage. Tears filled Mama Pearl’s eyes.

Mama Pearl quickly rested the box in her hand on top of the car and leaned inside to look at the young girl. Suddenly, two pair of red, haunted eyes stared up at her, piercing her soul.

“Help me,” the weak voice begged a little above a whisper.

Mama Pearl gasped loudly and pulled her head out of the car. She cushioned her weak body against the car as her jelly feet felt as if they were about to crumble. “Lord, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl muttered. “Dear Lord, dear Lord.”

Mama Pearl was not a stranger to the homeless people scattered all over Kingston. She was a long-standing viewer of the poverty that hit so many Jamaicans and only seemed to get worse, day by day.

Her heart bled as she turned and stared at the sick child again. She looked as if she was a minute away from death’s door.

Tiny rambled some gibberish and moaned in agony as sharp needles pricked her all over her ice-cold body. Her teeth chattered, and her eyes rolled around listlessly in her head.

Excerpt from God Has Spoken

Tiny watched her aunt through the window and cried even harder, her wet body now wrapped in a towel. To see Aunt Madge in so much pain was almost more than she could bear. As Aunt Madge’s cries grew louder, so did Tiny’s.
Finally, Aunt Madge knelt down on a large rock that pierced at her knees, but her heart was in too much pain to care about physical pain, and she began to pray. “Lord, this is too much for me to deal with,” Aunt Madge began. “I done fail that chile there and now her life is completely over. Please give me the strength, dear God.”
As Aunt Madge prayed, a sudden calm washed over her as the Holy Spirit gave her comfort. Suddenly Jeremiah 1:5 came to her troubled mind. Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
“No one is a mistake,” Aunt Madge whispered as she digested the verse. “I might not like the way and time this baby was conceived, but God knows best.”

Have you read "Are You There, God?" Are you ready to hear God speak?

No Running Water, No Electricity, But Always Faith: Jamaican Author’s New Novel Asks “Are You There, God?”

Diligently crafted by Theresa A. Campbell and based on many facets of her early life, ‘Are You There, God?’ fuses faith and culture to take readers deep inside rural Jamaica and the life of one struggling young woman. Serving as a microcosm of everyone’s adversity, protagonist Dupree soon comes to accept that God is always there for His children, even though His presence cannot always be felt. It’s a bold reminder to readers that staying close to one’s faith is the ultimate savior.

While Christian Fiction has seen something of boom in popularity as of late, most narratives for a North American audience focus on fresh-faced protagonists who often battle perceived adversity against their privilege. However, a bold and powerful new novel by author Theresa A. Campbell is bucking the trend by setting her story of wisdom in rural Jamaica, a part of the world where privilege is often non-existent.

‘Are You There, God?’ melds a thought-provoking story of faith with a cultural education to leave readers in a new light about God and their relationship with him.

Synopsis:

As a young woman in rural Jamaica, Dupree struggles to maintain a home for herself and the ailing aunt who is raising her after she was abandoned by her teenage mother. The effort of life with no electricity, running water, or money often leaves Dupree battered and bruised, but she refuses to be defeated. She might have been forced to grow up too fast, but she will not succumb to the wiles of the devil, choosing instead to rely on the power of Almighty God to help her through.

After a brutal attack that takes her to hell and back, Dupree must reach for her inner strength once again to survive. Her journey for a better life leads her to Kingston, a city some people refer to as "Jamaica's Sodom and Gomorrah." There, she sees and experiences things beyond her imagination. Dupree seeks comfort in the arms of her Prince Charming--but he might just be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Caught up in a web of lies and betrayal, Dupree fights to save her life. In pure desperation, she seeks an answer to her question, "Are you there, God?" Will she be around to hear His response, or will it be too late?

“Ultimately, my story proves that God is always there for us – especially when we’re struggling the most,” says Campbell. “Of course, we may not always feel His presence and we may often question if He is actually there at all – but the story of Dupree will help anyone accept His omnipresence.”

Continuing, “This book is vitally important as the story plays out in a setting that is vastly different from civilized America, where I expect to sell most of my books. We often dwell on our adversity and perceived lack of divine intervention in a country where we’re afforded great privilege. Stripping the narrative down so that it plays out in a setting where most have nothing was vital to make God’s omnipresence obvious. I hope readers turn the last page feeling empowered to grow closer to their faith.”

Since its release, the novel has garnered rave reviews. For example, Vanessa Abron comments, “This book was amazing from beginning to end.... It was exciting interesting and most of all a INSPIRATION...... I recommend this book very highly it's a must read. We must always keep in mind no matter what we may be going through GOD IS ALWAYS THERE...”

Rose was equally as impressed, adding, “This book was very exciting and interesting besides being inspirational. It confirms that with faith and determination, one can get through life's struggles, no matter what are the circumstances, you can talk to God and never give up. One has to be strong and believe that God is always there, watching over us.”

The difference between "Burying" and "Planting?"

What’s the difference between "Burying" and "Planting?"

Well, you put both in the ground, but in burying you are covering or hiding a body, a dead thing. In planting you are covering something that will come forth better than it went down. It’s a metamorphosis moment.

Always remember when you water a seed; it swells before it bursts to bring forth fruit. So you will experience discomfort when you are being watered but at the end of it you will never be the same. You will burst into your future! You will bring forth the blessings that God has in store in for you!

Read An Excerpt
Moments later, her eyes popped opened and widened in terror at the faces looming above her. A scream started in her throat but was muffled by the huge hand covering her mouth. She tried to move her arms, but they were pinned to her side. Desperately, she tried to kick her legs, but they wouldn’t move. She attempted to twist her body but could barely move. Tiny was pinned down to the ground.
Helpless, the tears leaked down the side of her eyes, wetting her neck before disappearing in the grass behind her body.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” the menacing voice boomed in Tiny’s ear. “I think Santa is a little early this year.” A chorus of harsh laughter rang out into the night. A cold chill ran down Tiny’s spine.
Visibly shuddering, her panic intensified, again, Tiny tried to move her body, but to no avail.
“Relax!” the command echoed in her ear. “You give us a hard time, and I’ll put a bullet in your skull. Understand?”
But Tiny writhed even more. Twisting this way, turning that way, she felt her body loosen a little against the human restraints. A burst of energy washed over her, and she kicked out her right leg, making contact with something soft. Angry expletives reverberated in the air.
Baff! A hard fist connected with Tiny’s left eye, snapping her head further back into the grass. Pain exploded in her head as she thrashed wildly in the grass. Arms frantically tried to hold her. But she bit into the hand over her mouth and screamed in terror.
Tiny was slapped repeatedly. Her face was on fire. Undeterred, like a wildcat, she clawed and yelled. “Help! Help! Somebody, help me!”

Refusing To Accept 'No' For An Answer!!!

Refusing To Accept ‘No’ For An Answer!!!
Written by my editor, Mrs. Joylynn M. Ross, Urban Books

Joylynn wrote: "Refusing to accept 'No' for an answer. On March 2010, as the acquisitions editor, I received a submission for publication consideration on the Urban Christian imprint. I rejected it, not because it wasn't an interesting storyline with great content, but because it was all over the place. It was hard to follow because of all of the technical errors. It also lacked the tension I knew could exist due to the struggle and conflict between the characters. I wanted to be more connected and care more about what happened to the characters. I wanted to be emotionally drawn in. But with two characters talking in the same paragraph, incorrect punctuation and capitalization after dialogue...I just couldn't get into it. I rejected it.

The author didn't complain and ask why it was rejected? She only asked what could she do to make it better, if not for me, but for another publisher, and most importantly, so that it could be something she was proud to put her name on. I gave her some tips and some suggestions. She went in and did the best she could and resubmitted it, but it still wasn't quite there yet. She worked on it some more and hired an agent. I rejected it when the agent sent it to me as well because there was still something missing from the ingredients. This woman went and hired a professional editor and submitted it yet again. This time I said no just because I was tired of reading it-LOL. Not really-I'm just kidding. I did reject it again, though, because by then it just wasn't what I was looking for to publish on the line at that time. So she waited several more months and submitted it again.

I said, "God, she did everything I asked, but I still don't feel like the time is now." So what then entered my spirit as a reply from God was, "It will be my time." Needless to say, three years to the day, almost, that I received her submission, Theresa A. Campbell's first book was released on the Urban Christian line and I'm currently editing her second one. Between the notes I gave her and working with a professional editor, this second manuscript, God Has Spoken, is bringing tears to my eyes. It is so well crafted and put together, that if she were a student and I her professor, I'd accuse her of plagiarism. That same author who sent me that submission three years ago is not the same author who wrote this book I'm now editing. This Theresa is the never give up, do the best that I can do and do ALL that I can to do, don't accept 'No' for an answer and wait on a 'yes' from God Theresa. This right here is why I love my job!"
